Creativity versus Artificial Intelligence

Daniele Schilirò

Abstract

This article examines the evolving relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence, focusing on the transformative impact of Generative AI (GenAI) on the landscape of human expression. By investigating the inherent tension between algorithmic processing and innate human cognition, this conceptual study acknowledges AI as an indispensable tool for synthesizing complex datasets and automating functional tasks across diverse sectors. However, its role within the creative domain remains highly contested. This inquiry posits a fundamental cognitive risk arising from the hybridization of the creative process, noting that human cognitive evolution is failing to keep pace with the accelerating velocity of AI development. Through an analysis of the works of historical masters such as Caravaggio, Picasso, and Leopardi, the article argues for the inherent ontological superiority of human creativity, which is rooted in a unique capacity to transmit complex emotion and aesthetic depth. The comparative case study method enables the identification of theoretical models in human-artificial intelligence interaction. Ultimately, the study evaluates whether GenAI functions as a sophisticated augmentative tool or a disruptive force capable of eroding the exclusive cognitive functions that define human artistic mastery.
