Integrative Complexity as a Meta-Competence for Visionary Management: Structuring Leadership Development within the VFC Competence Framework

Abstract

In an era marked by systemic uncertainty, competing priorities, and pluralistic stakeholder environments, traditional models of leadership fall short in preparing individuals to navigate complexity with coherence and foresight. This paper conceptualizes Integrative Complexity (IC) as a meta-competence within the Visionary Management Dimension of the VFC Competence Framework, which encompasses the domains of Leadership, Management, and Business Scaling and Development. Through a thematic synthesis of over 50 scholarly sources across psychology, organizational studies, and complexity theory, the study positions IC not merely as a cognitive trait but as a trainable, assessable, and developmental capability encompassing Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, and Habits (KSAH). The research articulates IC’s behavioral expressions across novice-to-expert levels. It introduces a conceptual model situating IC as the connective tissue that enables ethical foresight, strategic synthesis, and distributed leadership. The results suggest validity support for IC in the curricula of visionary leadership training programs and the need for empirical research to further explore assessment, pedagogy, and intercultural applications. Ultimately, IC emerges not only as a harbinger of leadership resiliency but a strategic necessity for guiding the 21st-century transformation.
